About The City of Chilliwack : Chilliwack, BC is located 100 kilometres (60 miles) east of Vancouver, BC in a location that marks the start of the Fraser Valley. Often called "The Green Heart", Chilliwack provides a city in the country feel. Here land is respected for it's use in farming. Still, the city is rapidly growing by providing more and more affordable home sites. These new building sites continue to come from the Chilliwack valley floor, by densification of the existing flat land, and by new home construction on the surrounding builder friendly hillsides. All of Chilliwack is surrounded by the kind of scenery that makes British Columbia beautiful and Chilliwack a special place.
Chilliwack has an exciting future because of it's proximity to Vancouver, BC. Home of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, Vancouver, BC is a rapidly growing city with an international reputation and flavour. Vancouver, BC is tied to surrounding metropolitan areas known as the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley. Chilliwack is inside the Fraser Valley to the very East and provides a wide and open gateway where Canada's Trans Canada Hwy (Highway #1) enters and exits the region.
Vancouver, BC and the Fraser Valley provide a limited supply of new homes and housing. In all areas of this expanding region there is densification. People desire to live here because of the great climate, the modern amenities, the exciting economy and the amazing scenery. The economy has been strong for many years leaving many to wonder just how big a city this region will become. Certainly, Chilliwack is a big part of this regions future growth providing close access to the rest of the region and providing an affordable and modern lifestyle choice.
In its pioneering days the community served as a gateway as well as a hinterland to the fur trade and gold mines further north. However, the arable flat land and the improved transportation of the Lower Mainland soon reoriented the community's economic ties toward the Vancouver area. As Greater Vancouver expands, the Lower Mainland becomes integrated as one economic region, and Chilliwack is very much a part of that region. See www.chilliwack.com for more information.
The incorporation of the area began with the Township of Chilliwhack in 1873. In 1881 a large subdivision called Centreville was developed. In 1887 the name Centreville was replaced by a more popular name, Chilliwack, and the area was incorporated in 1908 as a separate municipality, the City of Chilliwack. The City and the Township co-existed for 72 years, and finally in 1980 they merged to form the City of Chilliwack. Google search for "the history of Chilliwack, BC"
Chilliwack, How did we get our name?
The word Chilliwack is the name of a local Indian tribe as well as a geographic description of the area. Originally spelled Chilliwhack, this "Halkomelem" word means "quieter water at the head" or travel by way of a backwater. Interesting that this word "Halkomelem" makes referrence to two meanings, one of which describes the nature of the area (quieter water at the head) and another meaning that describes the people from this area, known as people from up the river.
